β-hydroxybutyric acid is a naturally occurring ketone body which is formed by breaking down of fatty acids during fasting to produce energy for the body.
β-hydroxybutyric acid has two enantiomers, D-β-hydroxybutyric acid and L-β-hydroxybutyric acid, the former is produced in the body.
Much research showed that ketone bodies could regulate insulin levels, enhance mental focus, increase athletic performance, and play a role in weight loss.
