Clostridium butyricum (MBCBM81) is a rod-shaped, strictly anaerobic, Gram-positive bacterium that forms spores. During the fermentation of carbohydrates and sugars, it produces short-chain fatty acids, biofuel compounds, and precursors of biomaterials such as hydrogen (H2), butanol, and 1,3-propanediol. Various strains of C. butyricum have been identified in different environments and are commonly found as commensal bacteria in the guts of humans and animals.
