The pharmacological effects of B. monnieri are attributed to the presence of a number of biologically active compounds, including alkaloids like brahmine, nicotinine, and herpestine; saponins like herasapononin; potassium salts and sterols. The compounds responsible for the memory-enhancing effects of Bacopa are attributed to triterpenoid saponins called bacosides.
